The Authority of Scripture By Pastor Phillip Lee

What is causing so many men and women to radically dismiss and depart from the scriptural model of Christian sexuality? Almost on a weekly basis, I hear - "I know what the Scriptures have to say about living within God's holy boundary lines regarding sexual expression; however, I am going to follow my feelings and emotions rather than The Truth I know." Today, far too many are banking their entire being on - "Well, since God is love, how can any form of sexual expression be unacceptable to Him?" What has happened to the fact and reality that God is Holy and calls all of His followers to holiness which points directly to the fact that He is a God to be feared as well.

Christians are the temple of the living God. God has said: "I will be their God and they will be my people. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty" (2 Cor. 6:16-18). Considering God's promises, every Christ-follower must pursue godliness and holiness and abstain from anything and everything that seeks to contaminate body and spirit.

It is this call to holiness by God Himself when He said, "Be holy as I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16) that must always be the deciding factor. Every Christian must desire to do what is good (Titus 2:14) and not yield to the evil desires of our heart - whether those desires are heterosexual or homosexual in nature.

In 1 Peter 1:22 we are called by God to purify ourselves by obeying the truth. Frankly, even desiring a person to fulfill any form or degree of sexual pleasure is sinful according to Jesus' definition in His Sermon on the Mount: "If you look on a woman to lust after her, you have already committed the sin in your heart" (Matthew 5:28).

Today, far too many men and women have tragically bought into the lie that they can never be free from sexual and relational brokenness. That is not true. Every person in the throes of any addiction will say, "I feel this desire is so strong that I don't believe I will ever be able to get rid of it." But the truth is The Scriptures say you can be set free. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1).

When you look at the root causes of heterosexual sexual addictions and homosexuality, it is obvious that they are all rooted in the lie that someone of the same or opposite sex will be everything you need. What a lie of Satan! Is it any wonder the Bible states in 2 Timothy 2:26 - "...they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." No doubt, there is intoxication to the point of consuming one's entire being involved in sexual desire and this Scripture shows us that there is a trap to sin and it is Satan's trap. In His mercy, God touches us and grants us a reprieve enabling us to return to our senses when we have temporarily gone out of our mind with ungodly desires. Anyone that has given in to allowing sexual desire consume to the point of dictating their entire being and identity knows the irrationality of sexual and relational brokenness.

When anyone works to uproot the evil desires of sexual brokenness, heterosexual or homosexual, male or female, adult or teenager, no one should ever be distressed by every thought or desire and think that God hates them. Instead we all should know that He is always extremely pleased with any of us who work to be free from sin and believe He is right there to strengthen and uphold us as we believe in His love and care. God knows it takes time to work through the issues of life to a place of freedom. He understands all that you are going through. Resist things that tempt you by taking each and every one to the Lord. Frankly, He is the only One who truly understands. "The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." (Hebrews 4:12-13) "Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22) Dear Friends, I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world to abstain from evil desires that war against your soul." (1 Peter 2:11)

Ministry Update and Prayer Requests

Since the beginning of 2008, HWOM has seen a 50% increase in the number of church referrals for teenagers struggling with unwanted same-gender attraction.

Our ministry to parents with children involved in homosexuality has increased 75% since the beginning of this year. All of the families referred our way are Christian.

Requests from churches to educate, equip and train their congregations regarding the complexities of homosexuality has increased dramatically with HWOM speaking, teaching and sharing testimony, at churches of various denominations, nearly every Sunday.

Please pray for the men that are currently enrolled in our "Time Out" Discipleship Series which is specifically designed to help them understand and overcome the complexities of same-gender attraction.

Please pray for the numerous families impacted by homosexuality that faithfully attend our L.I.F.E. group meetings seeking education, encouragement and support.

Our ministry in Guyana, South America continues. HWOM will return to Guyana this August offering a two-day conference in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, facilitating three days of leadership training on how to facilitate support groups, and sharing teaching and testimony on radio and television.

University Baptist Church, Bakersfield, CA
On Sunday evening, May 4th, HWOM had the privilege of participating in the HUB Service at University Baptist Church. The Question/Answer service on homosexuality was facilitated by Pastor Josh Heimiller, Pastor of Student Ministries. Great questions received straightforward and biblically-based responses regarding the complexities of homosexuality such as: Are people really born gay?, How do we as Christians respond to those struggling with homosexuality?, Is the Church homophobic, and much more. Ultimately, the evening was extremely well received resulting in numerous individuals stating - "We've just got to do this again in the near future!"

Bakersfield Christian High School, Bakersfield, CA
Once again, HWOM had the great opportunity to share the truth about freedom from homosexuality in Christ Jesus with students and faculty of Bakersfield Christian High School. Sharing with several classes on Tuesday, May 6th, graduating students received testimony and biblically based teachings with enthusiasm and gratitude. HWOM is extremely grateful to Principal Dave Meeks, Marcia Manning, Dean of Academics and Arts and especially to teacher, Mr. Randy Martin for the second opportunity to be on the campus of Bakersfield Christian High School. HWOM has already been invited to return once again in 2009.

Summit Bible College, Bakersfield, CA
At the "Christian Counseling Ethics Symposium" held on Saturday, May 10th, HWOM facilitated a workshop for Christian leaders titled Counseling the Homosexual Client. By invitation of Dr. Jeff Victor, President and Founder of Summit Bible College, attendees expressed their appreciation for being equipped with biblical and practical ministry tools enabling them to be more effective in reaching men and women struggling with same-gender attraction.

Marriage Been Impacted by Homosexuality?
Every marriage will have times of stress and conflict but an issue of homosexuality is normally never even considered to occur within a marriage. While homosexuality in a marriage certainly produces a crisis, it may be that with the "secret" becoming known, the marriage has opportunity to survive. If homosexuality has impacted your marriage and you are in need of a safe environment enabling frank conversation companied with biblical guidance, please consider joining us for our L.I.F.E. Group on the first Saturday of each month beginning at 9am. A bible study and support group for wives whose marriage has been impacted by homosexuality is facilitated by Ginny Mitchell, Board Member of HWOM, and meets during the second half of the L.I.F.E group.

June 7th - L.I.F.E. (Living in Fellowship...Even in Tough Times). Please join us at 9:00am as we welcome our special guest speaker Pastor Pat Tanner, Associate Pastor of Grace Chapel Church in Lancaster, CA. If you have chosen to leave homosexuality, or you are a spouse, family member or friend of someone struggling with homosexuality or you desire to learn about the complexities of homosexuality, this gathering is for you! L.I.F.E. meets faithfully on first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

June 14th - TIME OUT - A discipleship support group for men struggling with same-gender attraction meets from 9am to 10:30am. Our teaching topic for discussion will be What's On Your Mind? What triggers have you identified to sexual temptation?, Our weapons of spiritual warfare, Getting proper support, and much more.

June 21st - His Way Out Ministries Board of Directors Meeting

June 28th - TIME OUT - Change In Self-Identify: Do you agree that everyone is born heterosexual?, How do you identify yourself in terms of gender identity?, What do you think about giving up the homosexual identity? Time Out meets from 9:00am to 10:30am.

Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS


AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.
