Holiness is the Answer to Homosexuality by Pastor Phillip Lee

Holiness and not heterosexuality is the answer to homosexuality is the belief and strong foundation embraced and proclaimed within the Exodus International network - and, rightly so. Among Christian churches and ministries that are working to help men and women ensnared in homosexuality, there is a very wide range of teaching regarding the definition of being completely set free from same-gender attraction. Therefore, I will be clear in stating that to be set free, I mean a person can be set free from the practice of homosexuality and the desires that fuel any and all homosexual activity. I believe this is the will of God and it is entirely possible.

No doubt, many would argue that to be "totally set free" is an impossibility since we will always sin as long as we are in the flesh. While I certainly agree we will always sin as long as we are in the flesh, it does not have to be idolatrous, addictive or enable unreal levels of evil desires that war against God's truth.

Today, some would say that offering a message of freedom from homosexuality is to hold out a message of false hope to people caught in this particular sin. However, I would present the biblical fact that people were being set free in the Apostle Paul's day (1 Corinthians 6:11) and those whom the Son sets free are free indeed (John 8:36).

It is abundantly clear that Jesus counted ungodly lust with any participation or activity as sin when He said, "Everyone who looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28). So, how is it that we even try to justify having evil desires within when that is obviously looking on another person to lust after them? It is time that we all purify ourselves by uprooting ungodly reactions and lies that hold us captive and remember that God Himself has called each of His followers to holiness and not just those who struggle with homosexuality.

Today, far too many individuals, ministries and churches are stating and teaching that the very best a man or woman struggling with homosexuality can hope for is celibacy. In other words, each man and each woman can successfully stop activity but they will just have to live with the desires. I believe Jesus spoke clearly regarding all sexual sin and addiction. A believer in Christ Jesus must see lust as a sin, confess it as such and then work to uproot those "fueling agents" that often accompany attempts at justifying our sin just because we have been hurt. God knows every detail of our pain, abuse, and neglect and He desires to set us free but we must purify ourselves and that always involves the process of holiness. Admittedly, holiness is progressive. It does not occur overnight.

Clearly, every born-again believer must obey the truth in order to be purified and walk in holiness. "Now, that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers; love one another deeply from your heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God" (1 Peter 1:22-23).

It seems to me that if we (Christians) are to purify ourselves, obedience to God's Word is imperative. Practically speaking, reading our bible's, spending time in prayer, journaling our thoughts and feelings, spiritual work such as addressing ungodly vows, bitterness, envy and renouncing justification of sin because of hurt, are just a few of the areas that must be potentially addressed. Also, we must confess our sins and believe that doing so "God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Clearly, if we claim to be without sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

One sure way to stop lust and evil desires from consuming is to meditate on and obey the truth of 2 Corinthians 5:16 - "So from now on we regard no one after the flesh, though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come." When we look at people who used to incite lust in us for them, we will remind ourselves not to look after the flesh, or see them as sexual objects (possibilities).

I like what Oswald Chambers states in My Utmost for His Highest - "The one marvelous secret of a holy life lies not in imitating Jesus, but in letting the perfections of Jesus manifest themselves in my mortal flesh." When any man or any woman completely gives up the entire context of homosexuality, there is no more keeping records of how long it has been since a fall occurred or how long it has been since looking on someone to lust after them. Frankly, I believe that is all pretty much useless because God does not want us to keep records of falls or victories, but a complete change of our heart so we will love what He loves and hate what He hates. Indeed, it takes time to cleanse and purify our hearts. However, the process and journey is well worth the effort if for no other reason than God will be glorified. The answer to any issue of sexual and relational brokenness, homosexual or heterosexual, is holiness.

It's About Life!

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "It's About Life" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries.

The Bakersfield AIDS Project is in immediate need of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products. All donations will be distributed to individuals living at Ricky's Retreat (a Bakersfield home for those impacted by AIDS) and individuals needing monthly living assistance in our community. Gay Activists Hold Press Conference Outside NARTH Office

In July, gay activists attempted to enter the NARTH office to confront Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, President of NARTH (National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality) and to protest the existence of reorientation therapy. They are part of what's called Soulforce.

Soulforce had been hosting an "ex-gay survivors" conference near the Exodus Conference - which is for Christians coming out of homosexuality, and was taking place at the same time - so Soulforce was clearly an attempt to gain press coverage for their competing event. Turned away by the building's security, the Soulforce people then held a press conference on the sidewalk in front of the NARTH office.

Sadly, there seems to be a rising tide of tolerance against anyone who wishes to overcome unwanted same-sex attractions. Any person who claims to have been helped by reparative therapy or Christian counseling suddenly finds himself a target of ridicule and personal attacks.

No matter how many individuals go public with their personal testimonies about having been helped to overcome SSA (same-sex attraction), radical gay activists refuse to believe it. They resist the idea that a person can change his sexual orientation - yet these same activists say that a sex-change operation can change a man into a woman!

If you can really become a female when you were once male - or a man, when you were once a woman - why can't you succeed in modifying sexual and romantic feelings?

The tragedy is that not only do these activists want to maintain their own SSA, but they want to forbid anyone else from getting help to do it. In effect, they're saying to individuals with unwanted SSA: "Too bad. All of us are who we are, and we're going to prohibit you from getting any help."

In fact, gay activists inside the American Psychological Association, who claim to be neutrally "scientific," are working to declare that any effort to change sexual orientation is unethical and should be banned. Yet, the APA's own ethical guidelines claim the vital importance of patient autonomy! In short, there's a group of gay psychologists within the APA who are working to violate the APA's own guidelines on patient autonomy. They want to actually prohibit struggling SSA individuals from receiving treatment. This in itself, is unethical and should be investigated - but it isn't.

Meanwhile, NARTH professionals continue to work quietly around the globe to help individuals struggling to be free of same-sex attractions. They receive little publicity and certainly no accolades for their work - except from the individuals who are helped each day.

Despite the vocal opposition from groups like Soulforce, NARTH therapists use their skills to help men and women overcome unwanted and life-controlling feelings. They help clients understand how these urges developed - and how to minimize them. NARTH will continue to fight for the right of these individuals to be treated for unwanted SSA and defend the right of therapists to aid these individuals!

The Bible and Homosexuality will be our focus as we continue our series titled Confronting Pro-Gay Theology: A Balance of Truth and Grace. If you have chosen to leave homosexuality, or you are a spouse, family member or friend of someone struggling with homosexuality...this meeting is for you! L.I.F.E. meets faithfully on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am. Teaching materials are provided.

A breakout session is offered at our L.I.F.E. group meetings for wives whose marriage has been impacted by homosexuality.

October 13th - Focus on the Family Love Won Out Conference. See this link for more information. Due to the Love Won Out Conference there will be no TIME OUT meeting on October 13th.

October 27th - TIME OUT Men's Discipleship Support Group

The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.
