Really, What Would Jesus Do? By Pastor Phillip Lee

Recently, I read an article that compared the difference between homosexual orientation versus homosexual practice (behavior). A very critical and important question was offered and it caused me to question just how effective we, the Church, have been and continue to be in reaching men and women that struggle with same-gender attraction. The question asked - "If we Christians cannot love those struggling with homosexuality as we love ourselves, then aren't we violating the command of Jesus (Matthew 19:19) and ought not to call ourselves Christians?"

I believe if Jesus were here today He would reach out in love to men and women struggling with same-gender attraction and require that the Church treat the same with dignity and respect. I also believe that Jesus would seek and work towards providing a safe environment for those struggling with homosexuality to express their brokenness without fear of condemnation or persecution. Why? Because no one has ever asked to have a homosexual orientation and it is critically important to distinguish between homosexual orientation versus homosexual practice (behavior).

After thirteen years of full-time ministry to those struggling with an unwanted homosexual orientation, I remain in awe of the many men and women and their commitment to what they believe are clear biblical guidelines against the practice of homosexuality. Hands down, each man and each woman while fully admitting that a same-gender attraction orientation was not by their choosing, acting upon those desires is another matter. Clearly, orientation occurs and develops so early in life that many wake up one day and ask "How did I get here?" Trust me; realizing that you have a homosexual orientation is one of the most frightening and monumentally despairing times in a person's life. Tragically, it takes the overwhelming majority of men and women that make the decision to address their same-gender attraction issue a huge amount of time and effort before they realize their orientation is not chosen but behavior is.

Today, many have adopted the opinion that for any man or woman to be saved and healed from homosexuality, they must not have even a hint of a homosexual orientation. In other words, victory over temptation is not good enough. Hmmm! Causes me to ask - "Is my right standing with God the Father determined by that which may sorely tempt me or is it in the truth of Scripture which clearly states "He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels" (Revelation 3:5).

To say to someone struggling with homosexuality that "With God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26) is completely correct. However, to communicate that "He will" totally and completely eradicate your homosexual orientation is a bit presumptuous and all together different. How many of us could share testimony of how we have prayed and prayed for a loved one to be healed of any number of life-threatening illnesses, only to have the individual pass away. Yes, God can heal AIDS or cancer, but not everyone is healed. It's just too simplistic to believe that because God can do something, He will. Many men and women struggling with homosexuality have prayed for years to be delivered from their homosexual orientation - but it still exists. Some things in which we have prayed and asked God to move mightily may only be answered when we reach heaven. Frankly, I do not understand this - but I cannot deny that it is true.

Homosexuals do not choose their orientation anymore than heterosexuals do. Why would anyone deliberately set out to become homosexual? The anguish, pain, and social oppression alone are hardly things that anyone would ask to come their way. Now, before I am misunderstood, I am not attempting to by pass or gloss over sound biblical teachings and somehow validate the practice of homosexuality, I am simply reminding Christians that we are supposed to love all people - even those we have sometimes been taught and conditioned to reject and despise.

Can you even begin to imagine what an intense battle a Christian faces when sexual orientation and traditional teachings against the practice of homosexuality collide? Frankly, the individuals anguish is seldom considered or appreciated by someone that has never struggled with same-gender attraction. That is exactly why the Christian community should be a safe haven for homosexual persons to be honest about their orientation thereby giving the Church a glorious opportunity to encourage each other on to lifestyles that glorify Christ. Isn't that what Jesus would do?

Of course, as followers of Christ, the practice of homosexuality should never be encouraged or affirmed. However, when any man or woman has the courage and the integrity to disclose their battle with homosexuality, that in and of itself should never be taken lightly and viewed as an opportunity to share Christ's love and acceptance for and to the individual. The delicate balance, if not a down-right challenge, is our willingness to keep the lines of communication open and enter in to the relationship without compromising truth or love. It means not backing down from the truth of Scripture and remaining dedicated to "reaching" men and women in a Christ-like way. Since love is basic to Christianity, His love must be extended to all persons - including those that struggle with homosexuality. That, I am convinced, is exactly what Jesus would do.

Each of the above mentioned workshops rests entirely upon the Authority of Scripture versus the interpretations of some of the social sciences. At His Way Out Ministries, we are committed to effectively and compassionately communicating God's heart concerning sexual brokenness and wholeness, while disputing the unchangeable nature of sexual orientation.

The Gay Gospel? A Book by Joe Dallas

The following excerpts are taken directly from Joe's book and used with permission.

Argument: "The Bible is a good book, but its authors knew nothing of the homosexual orientation when they condemned homosexual behavior."

This argument is misleading because it assumes that orientation justifies behavior. It's audacious to think a behavior is legitimate just because a person is naturally inclined toward it. Recent studies indicate there may well be such a thing as an "orientation" toward drunkenness and violence. Are we to assume that if the Bible's authors knew nothing of these conditions either, that we should revise our view of alcoholism or violent behavior? Nowhere in the Bible is any behavior condemned with a qualification, as in, "Thou shalt not do this thing unless thou hast an orientation toward it." Nor does the context of a "loving relationship" justify any sexual sin mentioned in Scripture, as pro-gay spokesmen would have us believe. The love between two homosexuals cannot make homosexuality normal or legitimate, any more than the love of two people committing adultery justifies the breaking of marital vows.

Besides, if orientation justifies sexual behavior, why stop at homosexuality? Pedophilia is believed by some experts to be an orientation; bestiality may be seen the same way in the future. Does biblical ignorance of these conditions nullify biblical injunctions against the actions they result in?

Not if Scripture is truly inspired - and there's the crux of the issue. If the Holy Spirit indeed moved the biblical authors to write under His guidance, as 2 Timothy 3:16 asserts, then it's insulting to think the third person of the Trinity was ignorant of the human condition. If the Bible prohibits certain behaviors only because its authors were ignorant of the "orientations" leading to them, then it is not, as it claims to be, "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). Rather, it is outdated, uninformed, and irrelevant. There is no middle ground.

"It is ludicrous to believe that the Creator of the universe, in guiding the biblical authors, was ignorant concerning the things we know about homosexuality through modern biology, psychology, sociology, and so forth. To deny scriptural statements about homosexuality on these grounds is to completely deny God's superintendence in the authorship of Scripture." John Gudel - Christian Research Journal

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.

Canned tuna Canned soups
Canned ravioli Canned pasta products, e.g.Spaghettio's
