What Is Homosexuality? By Pastor Phillip Lee

Let me begin by defining what homosexuality is and is not. It is not just a strong attraction for those of the same gender. Someone who is tempted to steal something isn't a thief until he actually gives in to his desire. And someone who's been hurt by another may feel like hating that person - but it's when he gives himself over to this desire that he's stepped over the line. That means giving your mind over to pursuing lustful thoughts (maybe through pornography), or giving your body over to pursue these desires. However, just having some kind of homosexual encounter in your past doesn't necessarily mean that you're homosexual.

Therefore, a homosexual is a person who not only has a strong attraction for the same gender, but has also made the decision to yield to these desires. Permit me to be frank. The gay mentality or life-style aren't things you just "stumble" into - you walk into them step by step. In other words, while homosexual tendencies are discovered, the gay identity is decided upon and ultimately embraced.

Tragically today, many people are still asking, "So what's wrong with being gay, anyway? It's my sexual preference. What difference does it make? Didn't God make us the way we are?" So many men and women have struggled with homosexual desires for so long that there is a growing confusion as to whether or not it's wrong, and whether a person can really be free from it all. There seems to be a lot of "experts" who seem to come up with a new "answer" every day, but in order to get the unchanging truth, we need to look into the Bible. God has made each one of us in a special way, "custom designed" really. In fact, He holds the only patent on the human race. So, if anyone knows how we're supposed to work the best - He does! And to show us the right way to live, He has given us the Bible - the most printed and read book in the world. I remain convinced that God is doing His utmost to remind each and every one of us that He is perfect and because He knows everything, He is trying to protect us from unseen dangers. God wants us to be filled with real happiness, and through the Bible He shows us the way to life. And, He also shows us the way to death.

God has made it abundantly clear in Scripture that He never intended men and women to be homosexual. The homosexual condition is often a result of many hurts, real or perceived, that individuals suffer in the wake of a breach in relationship, overt or subtle, with a significant adult, usually of the same gender. The homosexual behavior is the activity that emerges as that "hurt individual" seeks to fulfill these unmet love needs. He or she may not know how dismally these attempts will fail to impart the sense of completion and connectedness that is perhaps the most essential longing of the human soul.

The result of these efforts to meet one's needs homosexually is that ultimately the loneliness remains and the individual is left more fragmented and ill-at-ease than ever. Often, in addition to this emotional unwholeness, the person often blames God for his hurts and for creating him homosexual. However, Jesus said that He came to bring us life. We must remember that He is the One who designed each and every one of us. He promises us that if we walk with Him, following His good directions and commands, we'll have real happiness and there will be peace in our hearts. But He also promises that if we think we know better, and push away from Him to follow our selfishness, the exact opposite will happen to us.

Today, so many men and women are expecting (if not demanding) a ZAP deliverance from God in terms of their personal addiction, compulsive behavior, habits, etc. The Lord moves in different ways in each person's life. Some people are instantly delivered from the power of certain desires when they cry out to the Lord. Others are set free as they continue to follow Jesus, making right choices, and allowing His power to release them from years of wrong thought patterns and actions.

If you're wondering if it's really possible, even the very first Christians knew the freedom that Jesus brought: "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked...Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions (sins), made us alive together with Christ." (Ephesians 2:15)

Jesus Christ is the alternative. He addresses the problem and provides the way through which we can find fulfillment in God and His people. By releasing us from the dictates of the past, Jesus frees us to live as new creatures. The Holy Spirit carries on that process of change in our lives. But questions and struggles continue. His Way Out Ministries began in response to these needs, with the aim of encouraging those with a homosexual background on to wholeness in Jesus. His grace is sufficient because His strength is made perfect in weakness. As we at His Way Out Ministries believe such love is Christ's intent for us, we affirm His capacity to carry it out in our lives, and in the lives of those who seek to be free from homosexuality.

Ex-Gay Ministry in Guyana, South America!

We are very glad to share with you we have received official notice from Patricia Lawrence, Executive Director of Exodus Global Alliance, that the ministry partnership between Operation Restoration (a local Guyanese ministry) and His Way Out Ministries, is now formally recognized and listed as an Exodus referral ministry in Guyana, South America.

Exodus Freedom Conference Concordia University
Irvine, CA June 26 - July 1, 2007

Throughout time God has been actively transforming lives and healing His people. Today God is calling revolutionaries to bring grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality. The Exodus Freedom Conference offers hope, encouragement, answers and support to: Men, Women and Students who personally struggle with same-gender attraction, Parents, Spouses, other Family Members and Friends impacted by homosexuality. The conference offers training for Pastors, Student Leaders, Church Leaders, Counselors and Educators to be more effective in ministering to those struggling with or affected by homosexuality, and reaching the gay community with God's grace and truth.

What Happened in May?

Bakersfield Christian High School - On May 2nd, Pastor Phillip spent the entire day with students and faculty at Bakersfield Christian High School sharing teaching and testimony on freedom from homosexuality. During each class, students had the opportunity to ask questions with many students expressing their appreciation for such a frank talk on same-gender attraction and the clarity of Scripture that was offered on the subject.

Desert Christian School, Lancaster, CA - By invitation of Desert Christian School Executive Director, Cecil Swetland, His Way Out Ministries facilitated a two-hour training seminar titled A Christian Response to Homosexuality for one hundred teachers and school administrators. The receptivity of those in attendance was overwhelming positive and numerous teachers expressed their appreciation for being equipped with biblical truths and practical tools enabling them to be more effective in reaching young people struggling with same-gender attraction.

Valley Baptist Church, Bakersfield, CA - His Way Out Ministries is extremely grateful to Pastor Roger Spradlin, Co-Senior Pastor of Valley Baptist Church to attend their church staff meeting on May 15th and present the ministry services of HWOM. Pastor Spradlin expressed the desire of Valley Baptist Church to partner with His Way Out Ministries in evangelizing and offering ministry to men, women, and families that have been impacted by homosexuality.

First Presbyterian Church, Bakersfield, CA - During the Chapel Service on Sunday, May 20th, Pastor Phillip spoke on God's grace, healing and "every need met" in Christ Jesus. It was a wonderful opportunity for His Way Out Ministries to offer a broader sense of God's healing and deliverance from more than sexual and relational brokenness.

RiverLakes Community Church, Bakersfield, CA - His Way Out Ministries is very grateful to Pastor Jared Dragoun, Associate Pastor of Young Adults at RiverLakes Community Church to have spent Sunday evening, May 27th with young adults and discuss the impact of homosexuality on the Church and dispel some of the false propaganda regarding homosexuality that so many have tragically embraced as truth and fact.

Coming Up This Month!

June 2nd - L.I.F.E. (Living in Fellowship...Even in Tough Times). On Saturday, June 2nd, we will continue our teaching series Confronting Pro-Gay Theology: A Balance of Truth and Grace with specific attention given to How the Gay Christian Movement Began. If you have chosen to leave homosexuality, or you are a spouse, family member or friend of someone struggling with homosexuality...this group is for you! L.I.F.E. meets faithfully on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

June 9th - "TIME OUT" Men's Discipleship Support Group - On Saturday, June 9th, we will turn our attention to "Addiction." Ultimately, sexual sin must be brought into the light. While it will certainly take humility to confess your struggle, it is the only way to break the hold addiction has over you. Confession and accountability are keys to freedom. Time Out meets from 9am to 11am.

June 23rd - "TIME OUT" Men's Discipleship Support Group - "Pornography" will be our subject focus. Pornography is writings, photographs, movies, etc. that are intended to cause sexual excitement. Pornography exploits people, distorts reality, is sinful, hinders real intimacy, and implants unclean images in your mind. We will look at the issue of pornography and the impact it has on those struggling with same-gender attraction. Time Out meets from 9am to 11am.

Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS


AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.
