Guyana, South America Ministry Development By Pat Lawrence

God is opening doors for ministry development across the Caribbean. Guyana, South America is just one place where we see ministry development in the Caribbean is occurring. His Way Out Ministries is an example of an Exodus member ministry sending people to plant a new ministry.

Although Guyana is on the northern shoulder of South America, it is more culturally associated with the Caribbean than Latin America. With nearly 90% of its population made up of African and Indian ethnic groups, it is more closely related to Caribbean countries like Trinidad and Tobago than its Latin American neighbors Venezuela and Brazil. In addition, Guyana, as a former colony of the United Kingdom, is an English-speaking country.

God opened the door for His Way Out Ministries to make several trips to Guyana, South America. The purpose of these trips was to raise awareness, educate and encourage the Body of Christ to minister to those struggling with homosexuality. During the past few years the Church and nation of Guyana have been confronted with a political debate seeking to constitutionally protect homosexual behavior as a fundamental right. Consequently, these trips have not only been timely, but well received by Guyanese Christians.

His Way Out Ministries networked with several indigenous churches, schools, media and formed an important partnership with Operation Restoration; a Guyanese-run outreach dedicated to educating youth and adults about the values of abstinence and sexual purity. The collaboration between His Way Out Ministries and Operation Restoration has made it possible for the first time in the history of the Guyanese Church to launch a permanent ministry for those bound by the snare of homosexuality.

His Way Out Ministries kept Exodus Global Alliance informed about their ministry development work in Guyana. As the ministry in Guyana developed, His Way Out Ministries encouraged the local ministry to connect with and become a member of Exodus Global Alliance.

There is another looming crisis that His Way Out Ministries has also come alongside the Guyanese people to help resolve. Unfortunately, just as is the case of other Caribbean nations, HIV/AIDS is a growing problem in Guyana. According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, approximately 3-7% of the population has been infected. This is the second highest prevalence rate in the Western Hemisphere next to Haiti.

In January 2006, His Way Out Ministries' Executive Director, Pastor Phillip Lee, made a trip to the eastern region of Guyana to formally dedicate Alpha Covenant Children's Home, the first home in Guyana for children infected with HIV/AIDS. Along with prayers and financial assistance, Alpha Covenant Children's Home, a facet of World Harvest Missions, is now serving these children. This is an example of ministry development through mission's partnerships. Exodus Global Alliance, member ministries such as His Way Out Ministries, local churches and Christians working together in ministry development. In some cases it is Exodus Global Alliance who leads the work. In this case, His Way Out Ministries led the work.

Reaching Gay Youth By Darren Thompson

Homosexuality is a symptom of a spiritual and relational problem. Therefore, simply stopping the behavior is not really getting to the root of what is making the person "feel different." Common pitfalls for youth involved in or trying to stop their participation in homosexuality include fear, envy, unbelief, isolation and peer pressure.

For the Christian trying to minister to a gay youth, ask these questions: Does the young person experience a lot of rejection by others? Is the teen uncomfortable with his gender? Does he spurn others of the same-sex, refusing to hang out with anyone other than a gay friend? Is the youth afraid of meeting new people, attending social gatherings, etc.? Is she overly critical or fearful of men? Is the teen envious of certain characteristics others of the same-sex have that he does not?

Often times a cycle of envy is the irritant at the root of same-sex attractions. In the case of pre-homosexual young men, for example, many claim they were never very athletic or fit in with other boys. Many were genuinely interested in solitary activities that included creativity and academics. While art, music, reading and imagination are great interests for anyone, by virtue of these interests, the young person or child may require prolonged times in isolation, exempting himself from developing valuable relational skills. As a result, some young people set themselves apart from the same-sex bonding that is normally necessary to build identification with the same-sex, self confidence and camaraderie with others of their gender. Insecurity usually later develops into envy of those who are stronger, taller, masculine/feminine confident, attributes they fell they lack. Furthermore, because the pre-homosexual child may not have developed the same interests, they later cannot connect with others of the same-sex during adolescence. It becomes a vicious cycle of "feeling different" while at the same time being physically attracted to those who make them feel that they do not measure up. Although anatomically the same, in a pre-homosexual youth's mind, they are in many respects opposite of their same-sex counterparts. In this regard, opposites do attract.

James wrote, For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice (3:16). Envy always leaves the jealous person feeling incomplete. It is important to advise the teen not to continually compare his physique or personality with others. Since many adolescents struggle with issues of self-worth, teach him about his priceless worth in God's sight. In other words, the solution to a spiritual and relational problem requires spiritual (embracing God's view of us and our identity in Christ) and relational (learning to face fears and befriending those that intimidate or appeal to the youth the most) solutions. Many times in the youth's mind, his past failures preclude him from being any different now. Be sure to encourage the youth that no matter what level of sexual experimentation he may have participated in, he can begin to connect with other guys now in healthy ways and fit in.

A Note from Pastor Phillip Lee, Executive Director, His Way Out Ministries

Once again, at this very special time of year, I want to personally thank each and every one of you who faithfully support His Way Out Ministries with your prayers, participation and financial blessings. Truly, because of your faithfulness, His Way Out Ministries continues to reach out in the Name of Jesus to the wounded, broken and hurting.

If you are not aware, His Way Out Ministries is supported by people just like you who believe in our mission. What might surprise you is the reality of just how wonderful our regular monthly supporters are because it allows us to do long-term planning. Gifts of $25, $50, $100 or more monthly remain the lifeblood of our ministry.

Few ministries are as difficult to fund as those which seek "to reach" homosexual men and women with the healing power of Jesus Christ. And yet, His Way Out Ministries continues to receive regular requests for help. We regularly receive email requests from Germany, Australia, England, Philippines, India, Africa, etc. Additionally, pastors from these countries and more have asked us to come to their country and conduct teaching seminars on ministering to those struggling with same-gender attraction.

Since its inception, many, many years ago, His Way Out Ministries has been a faith-based ministry that does not charge for its services, but rather depends upon the regular, free-will giving of its partners. Sponsoring churches, individual donors, and generous donations from outside sources have seen our ministry do more than just meet its budget - but to advance on all fronts. For this we give God praise.

His Way Out Ministries is incorporated in the State of California as a 501C3 non-profit corporation and all gifts to His Way Out Ministries are fully tax deductible under the Revenue Charitable Contributions guidelines. If you would like to contribute to His Way Out Ministries and have it be deductible on your 2006 income tax returns, your check must be written and dated on our before December 31, 2006.

Please consider a generous gift to His Way Out Ministries today. Pastors and church representatives, will you review your church's commitment to this ministry and check on the release of resources our way?

Your gifts and prayers enable us to continue this vital work? We appreciate your generosity. May the Lord richly bless and keep you.

Coming Up This Month!

December 2nd - L.I.F.E. (Living in Fellowship...Even in Tough Times).
On Saturday, December 2nd, our teaching focus will be What Goes Wrong? Homosexuality is a complex phenomenon. Some explanations offered for the origin of homosexual feelings are overly simplistic. Others are helpful, but may not fit all cases. We will attempt to describe a model that will be useful in understanding many situations.

If you have chosen to leave homosexuality, or you are a spouse, family member or friend of someone struggling with homosexuality, or you would just like to attend and learn about the complexities of homosexuality...this group is for you! L.I.F.E. meets faithfully on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am. Teaching materials are provided.

December 9th - TIME OUT
On Saturday, December 9th we will turn our attention to Walking in Victory. We will examine what it means to walk in the light and submit to the will of the Father through faith. We must believe in our hearts that His plans for us are good. And if those plans are good, following the Lord will be a worthwhile pursuit.

TIME OUT is a discipleship support group for men struggling with same-gender attraction which meets from 9am to 11am.

December 23rd - TIME OUT
On Saturday, December 23rd we will be discussing Accountability. We were not meant to grow in isolation. The New Testament reveals a life of mutual care and submission towards one another. Accountability is submitting our lives to others in order to preserve the work that Christ has done in our hearts.

TIME OUT is a discipleship support group for men struggling with same-gender attraction which meets from 9am to 11am.

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.

Canned tuna Canned soups
Canned ravioli Canned pasta products, e.g.Spaghettio's
