Teach About Homosexuality? By Pastor Phillip Lee

Given the volatile issue and debate over homosexuality, and the tenacious efforts of those seeking its social legitimacy, the questions of how public institutions handle this critical issue must be addressed. To be sure, a key sector of influence with great social impact is public education.

With any matter involving human sexuality, the first principle that should be addressed is the importance and significance of age appropriateness. Regardless of how anyone answers or responds to the questions of the morality of homosexuality, the question of how and when a child should be exposed to the subject is extremely important.

Today, it seems that more and more parents' right to decide when and what their children will learn about human sexuality is being dismissed if not completely taken away; especially when it comes to the by no means agreed-upon social issue of homosexuality. If the subject of homosexuality is to be taught, then "true education" demands that all of the facts be taught and presented. However, for those in the pro-gay camp, homosexuality is offered, if not preached as being "just one more kind of love." The obvious attempt is to communicate moral approval. There is no clinical, scientific or scriptural basis for viewing or treating homosexuality as morally equivalent to heterosexuality. Therefore, any curriculum that purposes to present homosexuality in a positive manner, when compared with the benefits of healthy heterosexuality, enables the potential for great harm, medically, psychologically and socially.

School programs, curriculum, counselors, etc. that truly desire to help children and teenagers struggling with an issue of sexual identity should not expose them to the nonsense that the homosexual orientation is irreversible especially when scientific literature and biblical truths do not support the idea that anyone is "born" homosexual. Should a child need guidance or counseling in terms of sexual identity, it is the parents who have the right and responsibility to choose when, where and how that counseling or guidance will take place.

Frankly, if given the current political climate regarding the "push for homosexuality as an ok, alternate lifestyle" within public schools cannot be addressed factually and within a moral context, then it should not be addressed at all. The issue of homosexuality and related issues is not about civil rights but morals.

How is it that so many people forget, those for and against homosexual rights, is that it is more than possible (and from a Christian perspective), both to judge a behavior or lifestyle as immoral, and yet treat individuals with the respect and dignity which they deserve? Since homosexuality is an "acquired behavior," homosexuals are deserving of understanding and compassionate responses from everyone. Since the Holy Scriptures remain a foundation for all truth and not just a collection of man-made myths or opinions (as some would offer), then those involved in homosexual behavior deserve to know the truth about the nature of their brokenness coupled with the offer of divine forgiveness and healing which is available through Christ Jesus. Why is it that so many would rather take the "easy road of acceptance" and not present the truths of homosexuality? Neither truth nor love is homophobic. Heaven knows, history dictates that any society which seeks to base it public policies on truth and love will both enable and ultimately gain one of life's most precious virtues - justice. What a concept!

Reaching Gay Youth By Darren Thompson

When our path crosses with a struggling youth, we need to be open to partnering with the Lord to help turn the tide in his or her life. During adolescence most people determine the morals and personal identity they will embrace for the remained of their life. Likewise, much confusion and challenges will take place before any semblance of clarity comes. This is all the more true for youth deciding their sexual identity. Studies have shown that vast numbers of youth entering adolescence are uncertain about their sexual orientation, but few exiting the teenage years remain ambiguous. Therefore, the teenage years are a crucial period for the Church of Jesus Christ to speak to youth tempted by homosexuality. Keep in mind though that a youth worker or young Christian does not have to be an expert on homosexuality to help a questioning youth. Our commitment to Jesus Christ, prayer and having a right perspective will not only make a difference to a gay youth, it will distinguish Christians quite a bit from others he will encounter.

While it is easy to become cynical about the times in which we live, remember when God is put in the equation of life, a hope that does not disappoint rises within us. It is true that the number of teens embracing homosexuality is alarming, but we should trust God and reach out to gay youth with the message of salvation and sexual redemption available through the Lord Jesus Christ. I am grateful Christians did that for me.

Sometimes we can get our perspective skewed when it comes to teens and sexuality. If, for example, Christians want to minister to a non-Christian gay youth, our efforts should not be to initially get him or her in a support group to resolve his same-gender attractions. Heterosexuality is not the goal, but the by-product of holiness. When I first meet homosexuals, I try to discern if they know Christ or not because eternal direction holds a higher value than sexual preference. If the individual is not a Christian, then we should first look for an opportunity to introduce him to Jesus, share the Gospel with him, and give an invitation to a Bible study or a healthy social function. Be gentle, but diligent in inviting youth to church functions. A gay teen may have various reasons (including being intimidated, ashamed, ambivalent and fearful) for his reluctance to join such a group. Continue to invite him and offer to accompany him so he can see the great contrast between partying on the weekends in the gay lifestyle and what Christians do to have fun. One eventually leads humiliation while the other results in his edification.

Keep in mind it is very important for the gay youth to know and feel the love and social acceptance of young Christians too, not just ex-gays in a support group. Additionally, the Gospel is sufficient to reach anyone for Christ regardless if they are a child, Muslim, teacher or homosexual. In other words, we do not have to learn and present a different version of the Gospel. Once he is in a genuine relationship with our Heavenly Father, the Spirit, pursuant to His will and timing, will address and resolve the issues of the youth's sexuality. But do point him away from destructive sexual sin. The Good News is that "in Christ" we are without blame...regardless of our past sin preference.

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.

Canned tuna Canned soups
Canned ravioli Canned pasta products, e.g.Spaghettio's
