March 2006 Highlights

Mission Accomplished! by Pastor Phillip Lee

Little did I know that some fifteen years ago when I made my first trip to Guyana, South America where that initial trip would ultimately lead. Since 1999, His Way Out Ministries has made numerous trips to Guyana with each trip having the goal of ultimately planting a permanent branch of ministry that would help men, women, families and the Church at large with the issue of homosexuality. Several years ago, I became acutely aware that Guyana was moving towards further acceptance and even the possible legalization of homosexuality, while at the same time unequipped to minister to the many men and women bound by same-gender attraction.

The vision of a permanently established ex-gay ministry in Guyana has been a long time birth process. However, after many trips, the developing of numerous, significant friendships and ministry partnerships, the vision even being sometimes greatly challenged, the vision has now become a reality!

On January 15, 2006, Michael Ross and I began our journey to a highly anticipated trip to Guyana. Gratefully, the Lord provided picture perfect weather for our departure out of Bakersfield (which in January can very often be socked in by dense fog), and we departed on time and as scheduled. This particular trip would soon become full of memorable surprises and occurrences. The main purpose of our trip was to develop and strengthen our new ministry partnership with a local Guyanese ministry called Operation Restoration, co-led by Phyllis Jordan and Jennifer Flatts. Since the focus of Operation Restoration is to promote and teach abstinence and sexual purity, their ministry position and the position of His Way Out Ministries is a perfect fit.

During our time in Guyana, OR (Operation Restoration) and HWOM (His Way Out Ministries) held numerous planning sessions to detail and organize how we would together launch the very first permanent ministry in all of Guyana to those struggling with same-gender attraction. Things progressed very rapidly and within a few days of meetings, a well detailed foundation had been constructed and both ministries were excited about the future. Wonderfully, several individuals stepped forward to express their interest and belief that they were "called" to our focus of ministry, thereby enabling counseling and the facilitation of support groups to those struggling with homosexuality.

Michael and I had numerous opportunities to share testimony and teaching to adult and youth gatherings throughout Guyana. Numerous pastors expressed their deep appreciation for our presentations and strongly encouraged our continued ministry in Guyana. Remarkably, several Pastors made a point of sharing with us their need to repent for not educating themselves regarding the complexities of homosexuality and following through with "ministry" to those bound by homosexuality. Their confession, transparency and humility was extremely refreshing regarding the subject matter.

A huge surprise came our way when the President of the Wesleyan Bible Institute invited His Way Out Ministries to teach a two-week course on freedom from homosexuality in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, to students and pastors. Remarkably, the President's invitation is to conduct the course yearly. This wonderful door of opportunity and incredible venue will greatly enable the message of transformation to spread throughout Guyana largely due to fifteen different denominations attending the university.

One of the primary reasons for our trip was to open the doors to the very first children's home in Guyana for children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Guyana is second only to Haiti in the entire Caribbean for the highest rate of infected persons. The home, appropriately name, Alpha Covenant Home, is now open and His Way Out Ministries was given the wonderful privilege of prayerfully dedicating the home to God's glory and Kingdom. The home is being operated by Pastors Lucius and Esther Bruyning of World Harvest Missions, long-time friends and partners in ministry of His Way Out Ministries. Guyana is now in receipt of a wealth of curriculum that will help men and women overcome homosexuality. Thankfully, all of the curriculum, handouts, DVD's, etc. arrived as scheduled in Guyana and without any damage. Therefore, as a result of our ministry partnership with Operation Restoration, materials delivered, persons identified to lead counseling sessions and support groups, Guyana now has the first ex-gay ministry in the history of the nation. To God be the glory!

Truly, these are exciting times and all of us at His Way Out Ministries remain excited not only in what God has done and continues to do here in America, but now in Guyana, South America. Vanguard University, Irvine, CA - March 27-30, 2006

Beginning March 27, 2006, Pastor Phillip will have the wonderful opportunity to share a message of hope and transformation at Vanguard University during the morning chapel services. With each message focusing on Homosexuality and the Reality of Change, His Way Out Ministries is extremely honored and grateful for this wonderful opportunity to present biblical truths and testimony regarding freedom from homosexuality. Rest assured, the message at each service will be undeniably clear...freedom from homosexuality is possible when Jesus Christ is Lord of your life. Once again, all of us at HWOM give God praise for yet another incredible door of opportunity to proclaim what a healing, restoring, delivering God He is and shall always remain.

Canyon Hills Assembly of God - Bakersfield, CA Teaching Series

Beginning March 5th and meeting each Sunday thereafter during the Adult Sunday School Hour in March at Canyon Hills Assembly of God, HWOM will be teaching a series titled A Christian Response to Homosexuality. Covering topics such as: Can homosexuals really change?, How do I as a Christian respond to a loved one involved in homosexuality?, What does the Bible have to say about homosexuality?, What are some of the do's and don'ts of reaching those in homosexuality, and much, much more, HWOM remains grateful to Canyon Hills Assembly of God for our past and continued partnership in ministry. All teaching series participants will leave with a working knowledge of how better to reach those bound by homosexuality.

Coming Up This Month!

March 4th - L.I.F.E. (Living in Fellowship...Even in Tough Times). If you have chosen to leave homosexuality, or you are a spouse, family member or friend of someone struggling with homosexuality, or you would just like to attend and learn about the complexities of homosexuality...this group is for you. L.I.F.E. meets faithfully on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am. On Saturday, March 4h, we will continue our series: As a Christian, how should we respond to trauma and crisis?

March 5th - Grace Assembly of God, Bakersfield, CA - At the 5PM evening service, His Way Out Ministries will be sharing a message focusing on how we, the Church, must reach those bound by homosexuality.

March 11th & 25th - "Time Out" - A discipleship support group meeting for men struggling with same-gender attraction meets from 9am to 11am.

Saturday April 29th from 7am to Noon - HWOM will be holding it's annual Missions "Fund-Raiser" Yard Sale. All proceeds will enable our continued efforts and ministry in Guyana, South America. Over the years, our Missions Yard Sale has been a tremendous avenue for us to raise finances to off set some of the expense for our work overseas. Therefore, in order to make this year's sale and our missions outreach to Guyana a continued success, we are asking for any and all donations. So, clean out those garages, cupboards, and closets! It's not too early to start donating. All proceeds will be used to assist our Guyana branch office and enable our message of freedom from homosexuality to spread throughout Guyana. Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS
AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.
