Welcome to His Way Out MinistriesOctober 2005 Highlights
Guyana, South America - 2005 Missionary Trip Report By Jim McArthurOn August 7, 2005, Pastor Phillip and I set out on our 4,353 mile journey from Bakersfield, California to Georgetown, Guyana, South America. It was not only a great distance geographically; it was a great distance culturally and spiritually. We were met at the airport by Brother Rawle, a leader of the Rhema church in a village community called Canjie. Throughout the trip I was struck that everyone was addressed as "Brother this" and "Sister that." Ultimately, I asked Sister Lou, a worship leader at the Stewartville church, why they addressed one another as they did. She explained that it made it more clear that we are all part of God's family. One of the first things we did was go to New Amsterdam on the eastern coast. There we visited the Alpha Children's Home. This is a home for abandoned and orphaned children, some impacted by HIV/AIDS. There are some truly wonderful children there. Their greatest need was for companionship and love. If we had been able to, Pastor Phillip and I would have brought them back home with us. The Alpha Children's Home is run by World Harvest Missions a church planting organization founded and facilitated by Rev. Lucius and Sister Esther Bruyning. For two nights, Pastor Phillip held teaching seminars at the Rhema church. The teachings centered on "Homosexuality and the Reality of Change." I also had the opportunity to share my testimony on what the Holy Spirit has and continues to do in my life. People from all over Berbice (the region that New Amsterdam is a part) and members from many congregations came to learn. During the three days in New Amsterdam we would visit the children's home to play and talk with the children. After many, many years, Pastor Phillip showed that he still knows how to play jacks. Reluctantly, we had to leave New Amsterdam and return to Georgetown. From Georgetown we made a day trip to Mahaica where we fellowshipped with believers. I was struck by the needs people had but more struck by their ability to walk in faith and trust God to meet their needs. I was humbled and felt rather than me teaching in Guyana the Guyanese should visit us and teach us how to trust God for all our needs. We had the opportunity to visit and teach a youth group in a community called Stanleytown. Pastor Phillip taught on the importance of sexual purity. On Sunday, I was really looking forward to worship and worship we did! We were in Stewartville where several churches came together for a service. It was a wonderful and exciting service where the Holy Spirit was most definitely present. Pastor Phillip was invited to teach on a television show called "Look What God Is Doing." The show had been running a series on sexuality and two 30 minute shows were recorded and will be aired regularly throughout Guyana. One of the main reasons for this trip was to continue to explore the possibility of a His Way Out Ministry (HWOM) branch in Guyana. Guyana has been, and continues to be, in the midst of a political debate on the issue of homosexuality versus civil rights. Instead of the behavior of homosexuality being treated as a moral issue, many Guyanese are being taught that it is a fundamental right! Many prominent politicians and people in the media are coming out in support of this lifestyle. The Church in Guyana has united and stood against any amendments to their constitution. However, many concerned Guyanese Christians simply feel inadequate in ministering to individuals struggling with their sexuality. HWOM provides a very specific message: freedom from homosexuality is possible when Jesus Christ is Lord of your life. Towards the end of the trip, in accordance with God's timing, we met Phyllis Jordan (co-leader of Operation Restoration) and Roger Williams (Associate Pastor of Bethel Gospel Hall). Both of these meetings were unexpected and unrelated. However, ultimately, both were in regards to establishing a permanent HWOM presence in Guyana. Operation Restoration is a Christian ministry dedicated to educating youth and adults about the values of abstinence and sexual purity. Obviously, this fits with the HWOM goal of reaching those bound by homosexuality. Roger Williams is a respected Christian leader in Guyana and has been instrumental in rallying the Church to stop the further acceptance and possible legalization of homosexuality in Guyana. Brother Roger offered to be the interim person to pull everything together towards the goal of the permanent presence in Guyana. The combination of efforts of these two Godly people is encouraging and exciting. Please join Pastor Phillip and me in praising and thanking God for all He did during our trip to Guyana. The Guyanese are heavily influenced by the United States, especially our television shows. Let us, as Christians be a light for this world and counter the influence of the world. I, personally, benefited a great deal form this trip and I know that everything that occurs is in accordance with His plan and His providence. I thank Him for the opportunity to take my light from under the bushel basket and to let it shine.
