Redefine Marriage?

If we, as a society, allow marriage to be redefined to include same-gender couples, then a downward spiral has begun. Given enough time, the original concept of "family" could be driven right out of our consciousness.

I have heard gay couples argue that they can do a fine job of raising children. Some say they are better at it than some heterosexual couples they've known. "Where there is love," they say, "there is a family." So...if love, for whatever reason, dies, the family relationship dies as well? If parents stop loving their children, can they, under this new definition, throw their kids out?

The real question is not whether there is love. The question is whether love "by itself" should qualify people to undo centuries of traditional and theological understanding of the term family to make it accommodate them and their values.

The answer to family problems is to correct the problems, not redefine the family. No matter how benign a homosexual couple may be, if you compare what the average same-gender couple has to offer with the average opposite-sex couple, the opposite-sex couple will win out, because they include a mother and a father.

Some feel that homosexual couples are less than ideal as parents because of their homosexuality. However, I would argue that it is not just their homosexuality that makes them less than ideal...it's their sameness. Children need the influence of both a man and a woman; anything less may be good to a point, but never ideal. To be of any real use, a standard must represent what is ideal, not what is good to a point.

Gratefully Redeemed,

Darren's Update From...Guyana, South America

Greetings in the Name of Jesus! Gratefully, I am safe, encouraged and remain in good health. The Lord is certainly doing a new thing in me. This mission experience is stretching and conforming me into a more well-rounded ambassador for Christ.

I am staying very busy. I travel nearly everyday with a Guyanese pastor to teach and preach. Since many Guyanese families live in poverty, we often visit homes and pray and encourage them and then bless them with groceries or a toy for the children. The needs are great here. Fortunately, the Guyanese know how to pull together to help each other and I am reassured of our Father's faithfulness to meet each of the needs of His family. Consequently, I am having many opportunities to see new places and meet many believers and pastors. I can testify that no matter how remote the area, God is at work.

I have also been able to help and speak at open-air meetings. These meetings are an effective tool to spread the Gospel. What typically takes place is that the church will meet at a certain village for three evenings to worship and pray. Then a pastor will present the Gospel message. Nearly every night people are placing their faith in Jesus Christ. Out of these evangelistic efforts, a church will be pioneered or new believers will be directed to a nearby fellowship.

I am saddened to hear of the incredible speed by which judges and politicians are taking to recognize gay marriage in the U.S. It seems that our country and families are growing more broken and disoriented to accept gay marriage as a new alternative. But, I am confident that when the world grows darker, the truth of God's light will spring up within more and more witnesses for Christ. However, the Lord has already raised up ministries around the world that share the same mission and burden as His Way Out Ministries for such a time as this. The Lord is fulfilling His purposes through them. As homosexuality develops in more families and inversely more families are grieved and split because of homosexuality, ministry and love must be available. As for me, as the challenges grow greater, I am anticipating the testimonies of more people that by God's might and mercy have been set free.

But, what I am learning is that no country is without great difficulty. As God's Kingdom expands, the nations of the world just become more worldly. As for me, I am excited to be a citizen of a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9). You see people of God, whichever country you may reside in, you are still a member of a nation within a nation, God's Kingdom.

In Guyana, South America, we look forward to Pastor Lee's upcoming visit to further proclaim God's goodness and relevance throughout the world. Your partner in ministry, Darren.

Darren Thompson is His Way Out Ministries missionary to Guyana, South America. Please remember him in your prayers as he continues to serve in Guyana until June 2004.

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.
