Guyana, South America Missionary Report

Our team (Pastor Phillip Lee, Ginny Mitchell and myself of His Way Out Ministries and Carol Wagstaff of Living Stones Ministries) returned from Guyana, South America on July 19, 2003. After spending most of the month traveling through villages, rural communities and the capital, Georgetown, teaching and testifying of the Lord's ministry to people struggling with their sexuality, we were exhausted. We encountered energy-sapping humidity, tropical rains, non-friendly mosquitoes and a lot of people with questions regarding homosexuality. It was exhilarating and difficult.

Our journey began in New Amsterdam on the eastern coast. We were invited once again by a church very interested in our ministry. For three nights we held seminars. Each of us had opportunity to share how homosexuality has affected our lives, what the Bible teaches about this behavior and what the work of the Holy Spirit can do, is and will continue to do. People from all over Berbice (the region which New Amsterdam is a part) and members from many congregations came to learn. The Body of Christ was united on addressing this issue regardless of what church building an individual may worship at on any given Sunday. Our seminars were marked by this solidarity throughout our trip. Also, we were able to spend time at the Alpha Children's Home, an orphanage closely connected with the church. Ginny, a teacher of the deaf, helped each child that had difficulty in speaking by teaching them sign language. We played games and hopefully encouraged the children. Our visit was brief, but we were able to privately minister to individuals.

Next we returned to the city of Georgetown which was to be our base of operations for the remainder of our time. Pastor Lee, Ginny and Carol then went to the village of Mahaica to continue to lay a foundation there from previous trips. They were warmly received and appreciated. I was fortunate to attend a kid's camp (summer camp is only a dream for most Guyanese children) and speak to teenagers regarding sexuality. Once our team was reunited the Lord asked of each of us something most of us had never been asked before. We were invited to appear on a talk show that addressed parenting-related issues. We each were requested to discuss during this one-hour program the impact of homosexuality on the family, how it can be prevented and the Lordship of Christ. We can testify that the Holy Spirit gave each of us the words to speak. However, our television appearances were not to stop there. It turned out that other programs heard that we were in the country and also wanted us to appear on their programs. So we did. We appeared on a live TV call-in show titled "Look What God Is Doing." On another occasion we were interviewed at our hotel by a nationally-aired, evening TV show that covers interesting topics in Guyana (probably something similar to Dateline or 20/20 in the U.S.).

The Lord's timing of this mission was obvious. Guyana has been in the midst of a political debate on the issue of homosexuality versus civil rights. Instead of the behavior of homosexuality being treated as a moral issue, Guyanese are being taught that it is a fundamental right! Many prominent politicians and people in the media are coming out in vocal support of this lifestyle. The Church in Guyana has united and stood against any amendments to their constitution. However, many concerned Guyanese Christians simply feel inadequate in ministering to individuals struggling with their sexuality. When we were sent to Guyana, we were sent to provide a very specific message to the people: the reality of change. During our trip an extensive document produced by Guyanese churches was distributed at a press conference they called in order to publicly express opposition to the legalization and acceptance of homosexuality. Our team was invited to this news conference. Though we certainly agreed with the political position of the Guyanese Christians, we were sent to equip the brethren on how to minister to the individual struggler or family, not get too involved in the national debate. During the conference we were pointed out of the crowd by one of the Christian panelists and it was announced of the purpose of our coming. Subsequently, we were flooded with reporters. For several days we continued to conduct seminars in Georgetown for the public and pastors.

We were unable to meet with all of the reporters, speak at all the churches or meet with all the people that wanted individual time for prayer and counsel. However, the seeds were planted and the Word was preached. On our final night of ministry, we were invited by a church in Linden to speak for one night. There was probably over 600 people in attendance sitting and standing wherever there was room! Unfortunately, we only had one night to speak on a behavior so complex like homosexuality. We were tired, but the Lord worked through us to teach and testify. We were asked many questions and we were accepted by everyone.

Our team is grateful to our Lord for the opportunity that we were given to bring glory to the precious Name of Jesus. We appreciated all of your prayers and support. Our hope is that we strengthened our Guyanese brothers and sisters and that we may in the future have other opportunities to do it all over again.

In Closing...

As a result of our recent missionary trip to Guyana, South America, Pastor Phillip Lee has been requested to return to Guyana and continue encouraging and educating the Body of Christ to those who struggle with homosexuality. Pastor Lee will be returning to Guyana on October 30th for the purpose of training ministry teams and equipping churches to become more effective in ministering to those struggling with same-gender attractions. Please be in prayer for him now as preparations have already begun for his return.

Gratefully Redeemed,

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.
