How Will The Church Respond?

A Gallup poll has found a gradual but steady increase in the liberalization of American public opinion on homosexuality. According to the poll, acceptance of homosexuality has risen from 38% in 1992 to 52% today.

In essence, we have become a culture who now worships itself as God, not only in mind and body, but also in destiny and purpose. We sanction this religion through feeling and experience while pronouncing all truth to be relative. How incredibly convenient!

We are a people driven, controlled and consumed by our feelings. Very often, truth becomes established according to our experiences. Our self-obsession and rebellion against the rule of God have blinded us.

Christians are commanded to ...come out from among these rebellious people (2 Cor. 6:17-18). Believe it or not, we do not have to respond to every feeling or emotion that comes along. God gave us a mind and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Experience must always be subservient to the principles outlined in God's Word.

I have been very fortunate to have met many men and women who have emerged from homosexuality. When I view the personal difficulties they have had to face, the incredible courage they have displayed not only in facing many difficulties but also in confronting a culture that uses every opportunity to deny the validity of their values, goals, and experiences, I stand back in awe. It is these people, former homosexuals and those still struggling, who present a model of everything good and possible.

Frankly, the battle that rages, is not over just a persons sexuality, but rather over which spirit will claim that persons allegiance. The cultural and political battle over homosexuality has become in many respects the defining moment for our society.

The battle rages over much more than just gay rights. The more important aspect of this battle is not the political one; it is the one for the individual human soul.

In his book, Eros Defiled, John White writes ...We are all playing Christian club games while men and women around us are tormented by sin, too timid to bare their bosoms, too ashamed to ask our help.

The churchs response to the man or woman combating same-sex attractions will largely determine if he or she will keep fighting. All the counseling, support groups, curriculum, etc. in the world will be in vain if he doesnt have a church to love him, support him, and relate to him.

We must recognize the existence of homosexually oriented believers in our churches. They exist and a tremendous need for ministry exists with them.

When we preach or teach against the evil of a lifestyle or activity, we should also be seeking alternatives to offer in place of the thing were condemning. It doesnt take a lot of expertise to develop ministry to those struggling with same-sex attractions. Some basic knowledge of homosexuality is helpful, of course, and the hundreds of ex-gay ministries affiliated with Exodus International can provide useful information. However, a willingness to be involved in the lives of those struggling with homosexuality is the starting point from which solid, successful ministry to them can develop.

Love, and the unity it attests to, is the mark Christ gave Christians to wear before the world. Only with this mark may the world know that Christians are indeed Christians and that Jesus was sent by the Father. -Francis Schaeffer

His Way Out Ministries remains dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging the Body of Christ to minister transformingly to those who struggle with same-sex attractions.

Gratefully Redeemed,

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.
