Welcome to His Way Out Ministries

January 2002 Highlights

He said turn your cheek, not your back.

Dear Friends,

AIDS was first described in June of 1981 as an unusual disease that was causing primarily young homosexual men to lose their ability to fight off otherwise common and non-harmful diseases. GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency,) as it was first called, soon took the name of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS. In June of 1981, I was living in San Francisco and I watched the AIDS epidemic begin to unfold before my eyes. Some of my closest friends were the very first to die.

Because of my travels to churches, conferences, workshops, etc., I come in contact with numerous Christians from all denominations. I am continually alarmed by the number of Christians that have been sexually active in ways that place them at great risk of contacting the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. Frankly, sometimes I come away from certain conversations wondering what's the difference between the church and the world when it comes to sexual involvement. Knowing that the incubation period for the HIV virus can be as long as fifteen years, I am greatly concerned about the people that presently fill our sanctuaries for worship. Christians must pull their heads out of the sand and stop thinking that believers are exempt from AIDS. AIDS doesn't care if you are a Christian or not.

The present facts about AIDS dictate that if people are not informed, educated and ministry made available to them, there could be far less people around even to invite to church. We must talk about AIDS and the related issues of this disease in our churches. As well, we must serve people with AIDS through prayer, visitation, education and training, resulting in redemptive care for the HIV infected and empowerment of the church, based upon a foundation of Christ's healing, compassion and discipleship.

As Christians, like the Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke, we are called to reach out to these victims, our neighbors, both here and far away. Thirty-six million of our neighbors...men, women, and children...are dying of AIDS around the world. Yet in a recent survey, only 3 percent of evangelical Christians in the United States said they planned to help. That means that 97 percent are choosing to walk by. Well...His Way Out Ministries has not walked by and will not walk by. Jesus calls us to stop and show mercy...just as the Good Samaritan did to our suffering neighbors.

Pastors C.J. and Sylvia Wilson and the congregation of Body of Christ Fellowship, have graciously offered their church facility as a center to distribute non-perishable food items to those impacted with AIDS. In cooperation with the Bakersfield AIDS Project and Kern Lifeline, His Way Out Ministries will be assisting those impacted with AIDS, on a monthly basis, with non-perishable food items. This will be a continuous, on-going ministry of His Way Out Ministries. If you would like more information on how to fund or provide food item donations, please contact me and I would be happy to talk with you. May we all remember...Jesus did not see disease as God's judgment but as an opportunity to show God's glory and mercy.

Ministering to people with AIDS and their families is a joyous opportunity to share in the comfort that Christ has given to all of us. It says in 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

Gratefully Redeemed,

Pastor Phillip Lee

TIME OUT: Pursuing Wholeness In Christ

Time Out is a discipleship support group series for men struggling with same-gender attractions. Although one need not be a Christian to benefit from Time Out, a primary goal of the series is to help men discover the loving, powerful presence of God who is there on behalf of their struggle. Embracing His love in the roots, the compulsions, the self-perceptions and the relationships that make the struggle, is the key to freedom from homosexuality.

IT'S ABOUT LIFE:
Food Ministry to Those Impacted by AIDS

AIDS profoundly impacts one's life whether that person has been infected by it or they are a family member or a friend of someone who has. The social stigmas, fears and especially the "aloneness" associated with AIDS makes it oppressive to live with. "IT'S ABOUT LIFE" is a crucial part of His Way Out Ministries. Because His Way Out Ministries is committed to compassionately communicating God's heart through a caring Christian community, His Way Out Ministries will be a receiving house for non-perishable food items. This will assist those with AIDS to maintain a balanced diet and good nutrition. Two major considerations in food donations for folks with AIDS are speed and ease of preparation. An appetite sometimes doesn't last long and the item has to be readily accessible and speedily prepared for the patient to be able to enjoy it.

We invite churches, companies, ministries, corporations, individuals, and the entire City of Bakersfield to join with us in caring. Offer your support by donating the below listed items.
